Remove the decorations individually

You must take out the decorations one by one. Don’t rush, even if you are eager to see your aquarium clean. The decorations contain bacteria that help your fish live healthily.

Removing them all at once could create an imbalance in the aquarium or stress the animal. It is also important to wash your hands with soap and hot water before dipping them into your aquarium.

Move the plants

If your aquarium has live plants, you are not required to remove them. This advice also applies to the fish. However, move the plants to one corner of the tank to see and properly clean the other items. It is also possible to replace old plants with new ones to enhance the aquarium’s decoration.

Suction the gravel

In general, gravel is used to decorate aquariums. Over time, it is often covered by algae. Therefore, it needs to be cleaned with a special gravel vacuum; this removes some of the dirty water from the tank.

Clean each aquarium decoration

Here are the steps to follow to clean aquarium decorations.

Soak the decorations in hot water

Boil a pot of tap water. The container should be large enough to hold one or two decorations. Above all, do not add soap or chlorine to the water.

Then, place one or two items in the pot and let them soak for 20 minutes. This helps kill a good portion of the algae and makes maintenance easier.

Clean the items with a toothbrush

Scrub the decorations of your aquarium with a toothbrush specifically set aside for this cleaning. Otherwise, you risk contaminating the tank. To ensure you have removed all the algae, you can clean the decorations with bleach. For this, you will need to mix one tablespoon of bleach in 8 liters of water. This last tip is not necessary if you are sure that the toothbrush method was effective. Never wash the gravel or rocks of the aquarium with bleach.

Put the decorations back in place

You need to rinse the items with cold water for 2 minutes to eliminate any remaining bleach, if you used it. Then, soak the items for 20 minutes in chlorine-free water. For this, use a clean bucket or pot filled with water. Some tap waters contain chlorine, so you should check before using it.

After eliminating all traces of chemical elements, put the decorations back in place. You can change their location or add new ones. Finally, don’t forget to put the plants back in their places while burying their roots in the gravel.
